Whether you're feeling stressed out, or want to treat a friend or relative, spa days are a wonderful way of investing in yourself, and those closest to you. You will emerge relaxed and rejuvenated.

As well as enhancing mental well-being spa treatments also improve the condition of your skin and muscles, so they're not just an indulgent luxury.

The great thing about treating someone to a spa day, whether it's a special occasion or they deserve a treat after a tough time, is that you can join them for some quality pampering as you catch up, unwind and enjoy each other's company.

And, while it can be hard to find the perfect gift, a spa experience can be booked in moments. There's no traipsing round town for something the person may not like, and which could be quickly tossed aside and forgotten about.

Equally, don't forget that spa days aren't just for girls! Of course they're ideal for hen parties, Mother's Day and the like, but the men in your life will love them too.

When booking your pampering sessions, ask as many questions as you like before, during and after your treatment. You can tell a lot about a spa from how your initial query is handled, before you've even set foot in it.

If you've booked a particular treatment, it should start on time and the therapist should wash their hands before touching you.

They should be sensitive to how much (or how little) conversation you want, and, if it's a massage, to the kind of pressure you prefer. During body wraps, hydrotherapy baths and facials, you should not be left alone.

And, while it's fine to be asked about your skincare routine and to offer suggestions, spa staff shouldn't pressurise you to buy a specific line of products.

The good news is that day spas don't have to be prohibitively expensive. Ask about off-peak and group rates, and other special promotions. Many spa clubs have loyalty programmes and calendars of special deals. You can also find bargains by signing up to the spa on Twitter and Facebook, and through their email newsletter.

Finally, only have the treatment you need. Give yourself a spa-quality facial at home, for example, or get a treatment from a beauty student and save your spa days for sheer relaxation and indulgence, and those treatments you really want.
