Harlequin - Eastwood Theatre for Youth

CINDERELLA has gone to the Giffnock Ball - and the happily ever after has lasted since 1976 with generations of youngsters strutting their stuff through high drama and panto while Harlequin in his motley looks on ...

Harlequin - Eastwood Theatre for Youth, is one of the leading amateur youth theatre companies in Scotland and has been offering the young people of East Renfrewshire the opportunity to get involved in theatre for nearly 35 years staging three major productions every year including their eternally popular pantomimes.

And throughout the group has been run by a dedicated team of volunteers whose latest leader is Harlequin President Paul Carnon. Paul's story is a familiar one, he first got involved with Harlequin through his children and what started as a fatherly taxi service has ended with him devoting a great deal of his spare time to the theatre group.

He says: "Harlequin offers young people the chance to get involved in all aspects of theatre not just the performing part but I have to say that most of our young people prefer to be on the stage and we don't get a lot of shrinking violets!"

"The good thing about Harlequin is that the youngsters can dip in and dip out taking part in some shows but not others and a great many of them come back to help when they are too old the take part in the shows."

And some have even been involved with the company from "boy to man" being presented with National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) badges for 25 years service!

Screen goddess Bette Davis said: "Without wonder and insight, acting is just a trade. With it, it becomes creation." And what a wonderfulcreation Harlequin has become!
