School bus service to be axed
Monday March 01, 2010
The Pay & Go school bus service is set to be scrapped this year.As part of strict council budget costs there will be no specialist bus run to most schools in the Eastwood area from August.
The schools affected are Carolside, Kirkhill, Mearns, Our Lady of the Missions, Calderwood Lodge, Eaglesham, St Cadoc’s (pictured), and St Joseph’s Primary Schools.
Councillor Alan Lafferty, Convener for Education, said: "I am sorry that we will be ending the Pay & Go school bus service from the start of the new school session this year.
"This decision was taken with great reluctance by the council as part of this year’s budget settlement.
"We simply can’t continue to subsidise a service which is used by just 439 pupils at 13 of our 24 primary schools.
"We spend £118,194 on it per year and that’s the equivalent of three teachers.
"At Carolside, 37 pupils were subsidised by £612 each per year and at St Joseph’s, 19 pupils were subsidised at a cost of £875 each per year.
"Pay buses organised by parents, with help from ourselves in setting up the arrangements with operators, already run to and from St Ninian’s High School. These are very successful, so we have experience which we will be happy to share with parents."
