Tuesday February 23, 2010
Eastwood MP's papal visit boost THE Eastwood MP was involved in the first Papal visit to Glasgow in 28 years.

Jim Murphy was part of the team co-ordinating the UK tour of Pope Benedict XVI this Summer.

And council and church leaders are confident that Eastwood students will get the chance to visit the city when the leader of the Catholic church stops by to address ten of thousands of worshippers at an open air mass.

Jim said: “There has been a lot of work behind the scenes to make this happen and I travelled to the Vatican to meet the Holy Father in October last year.

“I am sure this is going to be a hugely successful visit and that the Pope will receive a very warm welcome from across Scotland.

The event is expected to take place at Glasgow Green, and the papal visit will be the first to the Glasgow since previous pontiff John Paul II’s visit to Bellahouston Park in 1982, which attracted thousands of visitors from across the country.

A spokesman for East Renfrewshire Council said: “We’re very keen for our schools to get involved in the visitation - it will be a great opportunity for our young people.”
